Aging Gracefully: Massage for Seniors

by Nova Griffin, LMP

As we grow older, one thing we know for sure is that self-care is a vital part of the again process.
One of my regular clients taught me that "Health is wealth," while another client said, "It's not getting old that's the problem, it's the maintenance!"

As I sit here approaching my 39th birthday, I ponder on what I am taught from these people almost twice my age. You hear it all, like if you don't use it then you lose it. Well for some whether it is from injury, illness or just life; their bodies have spent 60 - 90 years trying to support them and it takes a toll. Chronic pain, limited mobility, depression... let's be honest, the list could go on forever.
But massage can be a wonderful tool to help maintain or regain a healthy mind and body. The positive effects of massage rest on sound science.
To start, blood circulation and the nervous system are especially vulnerable to the effects of aging. Luckily massage stimulates these systems in a natural, pain-free way. It can reduce pain and stiffness, especially in the hip, knee and shoulder joints. It can relieve stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness. Massage can also speed up healing from injury and improve lymphatic flow, helping with swelling and removing toxins from the body.
There are so many other benefits from massage, all of this leading to a better quality of life.
Here at Harmony Massage we offer 30 minutes or longer sessions. Massage can take place on a standard massage table, massage chair or just about anywhere. I have clients that even sit for part of their massage. Caretakers are always welcome to join the session if assistance is needed.
As always, Elderly clients should receive their doctor's approval before booking a massage session. It is also recommended that you seek out a Licensed Massage Therapist that has experience working with an aging population.
Also don't forget to ask for a senior discount!
Nova Griffin is a Licensed Massage Practitioner at Harmony Massage.  She especially enjoys working with Seniors in her massage practice.
